Statement of Solidarity: Black Lives Matter
June 18, 2020
My heart has been heavy for the past four weeks, which caused the delay of my official response. However, I want to make sure I express my stance on the recent events related to the death of George Floyd.
My heart stands in solidarity with the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and Ahmaud Arbery — just to name a few—along with the countless black people not caught on camera who have lost their lives to police brutality and senseless hate crimes.
Our country’s Declaration of Independence clearly states, “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal,” yet the black race has experienced systemic inequality in education, in our judicial system, in the job market, in our impoverished communities, in policing, and the list goes on.
So many Americans now stand, as our ancestors once did, in the face of our oppressors, with incredible strength and resiliency, still singing the refrain,“Deep in my heart, I do believe, we shall overcome some day.” Black people have never stopped fighting to flourish in a country with systems in place to keep our race oppressed.
I believe that all lives will matter only when black lives are valued as much as the most privileged groups in our society.
Black people need the voices and platforms of our white friends and allies to speak truth to power loudly, not just one-on-one with us behind closed doors. Now that the wounds of systemic racism are open on a country-wide and global scale, let’s push to create deep change together by having the difficult conversations that come with acknowledging racism, bigotry and police violence.
I feel deeply that disruption of the status quo must take place before healing can happen. A surgeon wouldn’t sew up an incision before removing a patient’s tumor. So let’s take this opportunity to begin to cure the cancer of racism in our society. Only then will true change happen.
As a black business owner and member of the community, I am engaging with social, political and spiritual leaders in Bridgeport, Fairfield and Fairfield County to advocate for local movements and civic engagement.
